Utah Habitats for Butterflies and Moths
Montane
8. Montane 9. Utah's Dixie |
Huntington Canyon along the Scenic Byway Utah Hwy 31 about 5 miles West of Huntington
The montane region of the state of Utah is vast and comprises many mountain ranges. For the sake of dividing the state into geographical regions or "habitat," the mountains of the Great Basin, Wasatch Front, High Uintas, and the Pine Valley/Beaver Dam Mountains in the southwest corner of the state are excluded in this section of what we call "montane" even though these areas certainly are "mountainous." The area of the Wasatch Mountains, Great Basin, Uinta Mountains and the Pine Valley/Beaver Dam Mountains are reviewed in the habitats designated as Wasatch Canyons, Basin and Range Province, Arctic Alpine, and Utah's Dixie respectively.
From the La Sal Mountains in the southeast section of the state to the Paunsaugunt Plateau in the south, and from the Wasatch Plateau region in the central part of the state to the East Tavaputs Plateau in the east, there is a substantial amount of montane habitat in Utah, and many canyons where you can find unique mixes of butterflies.
