Utah Habitats for Butterflies and Moths
Arctic Alpine--Leidy Peak
8. Montane 9. Utah's Dixie |
Leidy Peak is located roughly 25 miles northwest of Vernal. The peak itself lies within the boundaries of both Uintah and Duchesne Counties. (Actually roughly three fourths of the Peak lies within Uintah County whereas the northwest quadrant falls within the border of Duchesne County.)
You can find Leidy Peak by approaching from Red Cloud Loop Road either from the south side or from the southeast side--see map above--and then heading west/northwest for roughly 8 miles along forest road 43 (Hacking Lake sign) until you reach the end of the forest road.
Leidy Peak provides a breathtaking view of much of the Uinta Mountains and is surprisingly easy to access as compared to other similar vistas in Utah's High Uintas. From the parking area at the end of FR 43, the hike to the summit of Leidy Peak is roughly 1.1 miles with an increase of elevation from 10,900 feet (parking area) to 12,028 feet (summit.)
0.9 miles north of Leidy Peak (Duchesne County) where the gentle meadow turns into steep talus boulders as the habitat drops down towards Red Lake. This is a classic spot where Oeneis melissa lucilla hilltop and meet Oeneis taygete edwardsi in the meadow (opposite of photo--see top picture.)
